Understanding the Tewksbury Search Market
A town of 31,342 between the Merrimack and the Shawsheen, with two interstates running through it.
Tewksbury had 31,342 residents at the 2020 Census. First settled in 1637, it was part of Billerica until it was incorporated as its own town in 1734, most likely named to honor King George II, who had held the title Baron of Tewkesbury. The Merrimack River forms part of its northern border, the Shawsheen River runs through the south end of town, and the Concord River marks its southwest edge. Tewksbury Hospital, built as a state almshouse in the 1800s, still sits on more than 900 acres of open land, and Anne Sullivan spent part of her childhood there before she became Helen Keller’s teacher. Today I-93 and I-495 both run through town, Route 38 is its main commercial road, Market Basket keeps its headquarters here, and downtown Boston is about 19 miles away. For a local business, that means a town full of commuters, two interstates, a busy main road, and neighbors in Lowell, Billerica, and Andover competing for the same customers.
Route 38
Main Street, the town’s commercial spine, where drivers search on their phones before they decide where to pull in.
North Tewksbury
The north end of town toward the Merrimack River and the Lowell and Dracut side of the Valley.
The Shawsheen
The south end of town along the Shawsheen River, one of the oldest settled sections of Tewksbury.
Tewksbury Hospital Grounds
More than 900 acres of state-owned open land around the historic hospital campus.
The Interstates
I-93 and I-495 both cross Tewksbury, bringing commuters and through traffic every day.
The Lowell Line
Tewksbury once owned Belvidere, now a Lowell neighborhood, and customers still cross that line daily.
