A town of 42,119 on Route 3, with seven neighbors and a big weekday workforce.
Billerica had 42,119 residents at the 2020 Census. Settled in 1652 and incorporated in 1655, it takes its name from Billericay in Essex, England, and it still celebrates Yankee Doodle Weekend every September. The Concord and Shawsheen rivers run through town, and from 1795 to 1852 the Middlesex Canal carried goods through Billerica between Lowell and Boston. Today Route 3 runs up the middle, Boston Road carries Route 3A, Route 128 is less than three miles south, and I-495 is less than two miles north, while the North Billerica station puts the town on the Lowell Line to Boston. E Ink, Bruker, Entegris, EMD Serono, and Lantheus all have a presence here. The town is made up of villages, including Billerica Center, North, South, East, and West Billerica, Pinehurst, Nutting Lake, River Pines, and Riverdale, and it borders seven towns. For a local business, that means residents spread across a lot of villages, a weekday workforce from all over, and competitors on every side.
